Surgery
We perform a wide array of surgeries, including spays, neuters, tumor removals, abdominal exploratory surgeries, trauma repair, declaws and select orthopedic and eye procedures. We utilize advanced anesthesia protocols and patient monitoring techniques to ensure your pet is as safe as possible before, during and after surgery.

What to Expect When Your Pet Has Surgery
To make a routine surgery appointment for spays, neuters, declaws, etc., please call our clinic during business hours. If you prefer to have the procedure done on a specific day, please try to call two to three weeks in advance. Routine surgeries are performed Monday through Friday, most often in the mornings.

Leaving your Pet with us for Surgery
Surgery patients will almost always be left with us for several hours, and sometimes overnight. Some clients are very concerned their pets will be lonely or frightened if they are left at a veterinary clinic. While that is true for a few patients, nearly all pets actually cope very well. Spending a day at a veterinary clinic will never be as much fun as romping through the woods, nor as comfortable as lounging on your couch, basking in the sunlight, but rest assured that our caring, professional staff will keep your pet safe and as comfortable as we can while staying with us.

Surgery Decisions and Forms
When your pet is dropped off with us for surgery, you will usually have a few decisions to make regarding pre-anesthetic blood testing and post-operative pain management. Our staff members will explain the benefits and costs of each option and present you with a form for you to sign indicating whether you want or do not want pre-anesthetic blood work done for your pet. You will be presented with another form to indicate whether you choose to have post-operative pain medications sent home with your pet. There are links provided on the right that will allow you review these forms. If you choose, you can even print them, fill them out, and bring them with you the morning of surgery.

Dentistry
Good dental care is recognized as an important (and too often neglected) contributor to the overall health and well-being of our pets. Diseased teeth and gums can be painful and lead to depressed appetite and will sometimes be a factor in developing more serious health problems. We offer dental cleaning to remove harmful calculus, dental x-rays to help identify diseased teeth, and extractions to remove painful diseased or damaged teeth. Most dental procedures in pets require general anesthesia. Our advanced anesthesia and monitoring protocols ensure your pet will be as safe as possible for dental procedures.

Vaccination
Vaccination continues to be a critical element in preventing many infectious diseases affecting our pets. Vaccination protocols and recommendations are evolving in veterinary medicine. Our knowledgeable veterinarians and staff will take the time to visit with you about the most appropriate vaccine products and protocols to use with your pets to ensure they will have the safest and most effective immunizations possible.

Examinations
A thorough physical examination is the foundation for outstanding medical care for all pets. A physical exam is a critical step in diagnosing disease or injury in our patients. Exams on well patients are important to catch potential health problems early in their course so appropriate measures can be taken to prevent more serious issues. We recommend a thorough physical exam at least annually on well patients, and any time your pet is sick or injured.

Laboratory Services
In many patients, we need more information than we can get from a history and physical exam in order to make an accurate diagnosis. At the Peterson Veterinary Clinic we have highly accurate equipment in-house to rapidly perform blood chemistries and complete blood cell evaluations. We also perform in-house heartworm testing, fecal exams to diagnose intestinal parasites, skin scrapings for external parasites, urinalysis to help detect diseases of the urinary system, and ear cytological exams for ear infections and ear mites. For many other laboratory needs, we work with a variety of reference labs that will give us very accurate results in a timely manner, often overnight.

Pharmacy
We stock most of the medications we recommend for our patients, which allows for fast and convenient prescription fills for our clients. For medications that we don’t keep in stock, we can often call prescriptions in to area pharmacies for filling. We will even have certain medications mixed (compounded) specifically for your pet if an appropriate size or delivery form isn’t otherwise available. Our goal is to make sure your pet gets any medication he or she may need as quickly and conveniently as possible, at prices that are fair and reasonable.

Radiology
We utilize a digital radiology (x-ray) system that delivers high quality images rapidly, allowing our doctors to thoroughly and efficiently evaluate patients. For other, less frequently used imaging services such as ultrasonography (ultrasound), we can refer to clinics in the Fargo area. Advanced imaging techniques, such as CT or MRI, are also available. Those cases are typically referred to advanced care facilities such as the University of Minnesota Veterinary Teaching Hospital in St. Paul.

Microchipping
We offer the HomeAgain© microchip. All pets should wear collars with identification tags with their name and the owner’s phone number, but only a microchip provides a permanent ID that cannot fall off, be removed or become impossible to read. A microchip greatly improves your odds of being reunited with your lost pet.
